Guess Who's Back

I haven't posted in over a year but now I figure it's time to get back on that grind. And what better way to kick this badboy off again that with some uploads by the man from whose lyrics this blog's title and url were initially culled.

So, for now here's Steve Earle's newest effort "Townes". It's a fitting tribute record to his long time friend, inspiration, and teacher Townes Van Zandt and needless to say this record would have made Townes proud to have helped Steve along on the path to becoming the songwriter he is today. RIP Townes.

Steve Earle- Townes

The next thing I've got for you here is the latest offering by Steve's son, Justin Townes Earle (who is obviously named for the legendary Townes). This is Justin Townes' second LP (his third release- behind the Yuma EP and The Good Life LP) titled "Midnight At The Movies". He's still so young and definitely developing as a songwriter but so far all of his material has been incredible. On this album his voice often takes on a quality very similar to that of a young Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

In addition to the sheer talent displayed in the songwriting here it's interesting to note the identifiably autobiographic details of some tracks such as "Mama's Eyes" which gives us a window into the complex relationship between Justin, his mother, and Steve (a relationship explored much deeper in Lauren St. John's incredible Steve Earle biography Hardcore Troubadour: The Life And Near Death Of Steve Earle). Another really standout moment comes at the end of the record with the track "Here We Go Again" which eerily resembles his father's "Goodbye" and "My Old Friend The Blues"; in this track we can really see that he is Steve's son, regardless of the fact that he is competently forging his own musical path.
