"in 4 moves- the Bobby Fischer of rap" - Hov

RIP Bobby Fischer (March 9, 1943- January 17, 2008)

Fischer was the shit. he became a Grandmaster at the age of 15 and went on to hold such titles as world chess champion/professional weirdo. he was a genius, holding several records for being the youngest player ever to attain many of his accolades, and was forced into the spotlight in the heat of the cold war, crushing Spassky at the World Chess Championships in 1972 in what became a deeply symbolic act for many Americans. (u catch that whole hot and cold thing? yea, im not funny). Oh yea, throughout the course of his career he also played in 8 United States Chess Championships and won every one.

After that victory Fischer took a 20 year break from competitive chess, during which he withdrew from society, emerging only in 1992 to challenge Spassky to another match. in 1981 he published a pamphlet called "I Was Tortured In The Pasadena Jailhouse" which detailed a time in 1980 where he was arrested after having been mistaken for a wanted bank robber. after a series of unfortunate personal events and the development of a public persona clearly negatively affected by some combination of his wild genius and his having been thrust into the national spotlight for such a portion of his young life, Fischer sought political asylum in Iceland, where he was granted citizenship in 2005. in one of his last pubic appearances (in March 2005) via a BBC World Service telephone link from Japan, Fischer denounced George W. Bush as a criminal and stated his refusal to return to the United States while Bush was still in power. he died yesterday of kidney failure, it was reported last year that he had been suffering several health problems and extreme paranoia which had required previous hospitalization.

do some research. pay your respects to a real champion.
